Lombok - Pop Up Schools Torres University | Page 9

All of our pop up schools are built with a light steel frame. The walls are made with plywood and the foundations are made from bricks and cement. The roof is made with light steel called Spandek. The light materials allow for quick and efficient building of the schools and minimise any risk of injury in the event of an earthquake. Blinds are used to cover the windows which are 70cm in height to provide sufficient light and fresh air for the students. Supplies such as filing cabinets, whiteboards, cleaning kits, books and stationaries are provided at every pop up school to support learning activities and building maintenance.

The building process at each pop up school was implemented in coordination and close partnership with school management

and community leaders for a more successful outcome. Our assessment phase at each school was fully supported by the Education Department of Central Lombok Regency.

A local contractor, with whom we have successfully implemented other projects in the previous stages, was chosen to manage the construction workers and transportation of materials at all pop up schools. The Pelita Foundation's Field Project Coordinator managed and monitored their work at each school. The contractor was paid in installments where 50% was given as upfront payment and 50% was given as final payment when the building process was finished.
