Indonesia’s Lombok was jolted with devastating earthquakes in late July and early August 2018. These earthquakes caused the deaths of more than 500 people, left hundreds injured and forced thousands of people to evacuate their homes. For weeks following the earthquakes, many people lived without electricity and clean drinking water was difficult to access. With so many homes, businesses and schools destroyed the people and families of Lombok were left with much uncertainty.

Over 400 schools were destroyed on the island, leaving young students with no place to learn. The government and private stakeholders of Lombok have been rebuilding and renovating some of the schools that were damaged, however, there are still many schools that have not yet been supported, especially those schools which are located in remote areas.

The pop up schools you have supported provide children in these rural areas with an earthquake-resistant structure, school materials and child-centered activities as a temporary solution to get children back into school.

There is still a great deal of need on this beautiful island and there is still so much work left to be done to help all of the families and communities who have faced so much loss and devastation.
