SDN 5 MALAKA

SDN 5 Malaka is located in the Batukliang Utara sub-district of Central Lombok. Before the earthquakes of 2018, SDN 5 Malaka had six permanent classrooms serving 187 students and one teachers’ office for 10 teachers. The classrooms were occupied by 1st to 6th-grade students. The earthquakes caused damage to all six classrooms and the teachers’ room. The grades 1 and 2 classrooms were considered “slightly damaged” and the 3rd to 6th-grade classrooms were considered “severely damaged”.

In early 2019, the Education Department of West Nusa Tenggara Province in Lombok provided four temporary classrooms to replace the severely damaged classrooms. Those classrooms have been used by 3rd to 6th graders. 1st and 2nd graders have been using the outside terrace as a learning space because although their classrooms were categorised as slightly damaged, the parents and teachers did not feel the buildings were safe for learning. The classrooms ceilings are broken and there are cracks in the walls which caused parents and teachers to worry about the safety of the children studying inside these classrooms.

Based on the condition of these classrooms, two new temporary classrooms have been provided for the 1st and 2nd-grade students. On the 15th of February 2020, the building process began at SDN 5 Malaka to build two additional temporary classrooms for the 1st and 2nd-grade students. The building was complete on the 28th of February 2020 at which time children began studying in their new classrooms. Unfortunately, due to COVID19, all schools across Lombok were closed in mid-March. This meant that the children were no longer allowed to attend school and our local partner was unable to visit the school site. When children are allowed to go back to school, these students will be able to access their brand new temporary pop-up classrooms.

The entire building process was implemented in coordination and close partnership with school management and community leaders to ensure a successful outcome. The initial assessment phase was fully supported by the Education Department of Central Lombok Regency and the local community. The Pelita Foundation team monitored the progress of the construction to ensure high-quality standards were met. They visited the site various times throughout the building process and are pleased with the cooperation of the community. The entire construction process went well and Pelita Foundation and Classroom of Hope are satisfied that all project objectives have been achieved.
