This exhibit commemorates the 225th anniversary of the ratification of this revolutionary document , spotlighting one of the most remarkable periods in American history , exploring the origins of the first 10 amendments to the U . S . Constitution ( known as the Bill of Rights ) and illustrating how each amendment protects U . S . citizens . Featuring replicated documents , reproduction artifacts and interactives from the National Archives , visitors connect directly with the people , places and events that mark this historic document ’ s evolution .
From the personal journal written by Hélène Berr , this exhibit tells the story of a young Jewish French woman , whose bright future was cut short by the Vichy Government ’ s laws and the Nazi extermination plan . The narrative follows her steps through Paris under German Occupation , observing her daily experiences of the unbearable , oscillating between hope and despair , until her arrest and deportation to Auschwitz in 1944 . She died in Bergen Belsen days before the liberation of the camp in 1945 .
