LETTER FROM THE EDITOR THE OPENING SHOT Attention, sports fans: This issue is for you. Welcome to the Sports Issue of LOCAL Houston magazine. This month, we get to know the owners of Houston’s professional sports teams (with the one exception being Tilman Fertitta, who was busy opening his Post Oak Hotel at Uptown Houston and unable to participate). You’ll find the powerhouse group we assembled – Bob McNair (Texans), Jim Crane (Astros) and Gabriel Brener (Dynamo and Dash) – to be gracious, thought- ful, dedicated and proud team owners and Houstonians who actively invest in our community. I still can’t believe we got all of them. By the way, international billionaire businessman Gabriel Brener personally answers emails in about 10 minutes or so – even if he’s on a plane. The whole LOCAL team is back – reporting on food, the arts, style and community news. Janice Schindeler takes us to Mastro’s, Carlos Brandon dines around town, Mike Cook tackles Platypus and Frank’s Backyard, we go to the movies with Sarah Gish and take a look back with the Houston History Alliance. And FatFinds takes us to festival fashion – with a cameo by the Tony Vega Band (www.tonyvegaband.com). Plus, visit www.localhoustonmagazine.com for bonus features, event coverage and blogs that provide even more LOCAL intel. Thank you for reading and supporting our team. Tim Moloney editor-in-chief BEHIND THE COVER Cover star and Texans Owner Bob McNair invited LOCAL into the Founders Suite at NRG Stadium for a chat with Jason Korfhage and photo shoot with Kennon Evett. Here, Sherrie Evett models for the shot setup. Get to know McNair, and Houston’s other professional team owners, in the fol- lowing pages. UNDER (RE)CONSTRUCTION On February 13, 2018, Harris County Commissioners Court approved a $105 million renovation to convert "The Eighth Wonder of the World" (opened in 1965) into premier event space.
