FOOD | ARTS | COMMUNITY | STYLE+LEISURE WE'LL DRINK TO THAT BIERGARTENS BLOSSOM IN HOUSTON By Beth Levine | Photography by Daniel Ortiz It’s official. Houston has biergarten fever. With summer right around the corner, Houstonians are getting primed to do two things we love doing together: hanging out on patios and drinking beer. Luckily for us, the current crop of biergartens popping up all over town (along with some of our old faithfuls) are offering up a patio lover’s dream, combining some of the city’s best outdoor spaces alongside some of your favorite beers. TRIED & TRUE KARBACH BREWING CO. One Houston’s most beloved breweries, with almost 18 brews on rotation, Karbach opened up their mega-location not that long ago. Mega? Well, with a full restaurant and patio and brewery (don’t forget to take a tour) to accompany their biergarten, there’s a lot to do over at Karbach. So make a day of it. www.karbachbrewing.com AXELRAD. Bursting with hammocks, pizza, live music and one heck of a tree inside their courtyard, chances are if you live in Houston, you have been to Axelrad. Housed inside a 100-year-old renovated grocery store, this popular hot spot features an impressive array of beers on tap along with a curated cocktail menu. In addition to Luigi’s Pizza on site, Axelrad also hosts an array of local food vendor pop-ups throughout the year. Come hungry. www.axelradbeergarden.com NEIGHBORHOOD STAPLES in Midtown to The Heights BIER GARDEN and WORCESTER’S ANNEX over in The Heights. Positioning their beer gardens with the hopes that locals will say, “Hey, this is my city. Let me show you one of my favorite places.” Together, this trio boasts an impressive array of liba- tions ranging from almost 100 taps (beer, wine, cider and mead) at the Bier Garten to plans for almost 1,000 bottles over at Worcester’s for some serious cocktail wizardry. Add their seasonal menus coming soon and these patios are going to become hot commodities in no time. www.woostersgarden.com www.facebook.com/HeightsBierGarten | www.facebook.com/WorcestersAnnex Branching out from their famed King’s Biergarten location in Pearland, the father/son team of Hans and Philipp Sitter is behind KING’S BIERHAUS in The Heights, which has been heavily anticipated for months. With a focus on modern takes of traditional biergarten fare, over 9,000sf, including a lushly landscaped outdoor space, seating for almost 400 and 30 taps ... King’s has most definitely been worth the wait. www.kingsbiergarten.com THE BEER MARKET CO. jumped into the game during the height of the craft beer explosion. Offering 24 beers on tap with an additional 365 (yes, that’s one for every day, folks) in bottles or cans, this neighbor- hood gem is sure to please. The Salt n Pepper Group, the team behind The Beer Market Co., is also getting ready to bring you two more locations before the year’s end, in Midtown (slated for July) and The Heights (slated for December). These new additions will boast similar menus – get the Mac N Cheese Burger, trust me – and enough flat screen TVs to keep any sports fan satisfied. www.beermarketco.com THE NEW KIDS ON THE BLOCK 3.2.2016 6:53pm AND ... COMING SOON No article about beer would be complete without the brewery that put Houston on the map. Local favorite St. Arnold’s has plans to open up their first biergarten, adjacent to their brewery on Lyons Avenue just east of Downtown. While we didn’t get a
