LETTER
FROM THE
EDITOR
It’s June, and, as they do every year, things are heating up in Houston (and
Washington, also, but we’ll leave that to others to report on). We’re happy to
bring you our annual HOT Issue, featuring our town’s newest pools, buzziest
frozen drinks, hole-in-the-wall restaurants and icy family treats. Plus, all the local
food, arts, style and community news we serve up every month.
YOU KNOW WHAT’S HOT? Urban farming. Take a trip to Finca Tres Robles
with us on the east side of Downtown and learn about the first private farm inside
the 610 Loop. Working together, brothers Daniel and Thomas Garcia-Prats have
turned a food desert into a bountiful farm that is transforming how our community
eats.
What’s also ultra-hot? This month’s Fat Finds fashion spread, styled by Marzi Petris
and shot by Cody Bess at Winter (not Summer) Street Studios.
I always say that if I have to spend the summer in Houston versus a city like New
York or Chicago, I’ll take Houston anytime. You can’t beat – or even match – our
quality and quantity of air conditioning. This month, our friends at the Houston
History Alliance trace the history of A/C in H-town. The article is, as you’d imag-
ine, a blast of fresh air.
On that note, stay cool as the temperatures rise. I raise a frosty glass to all of
you. Thanks for reading LOCAL.

WHAT BETTER PLACE TO SHOOT OUR ISSUE DEVOTED TO SUMMER THAN ON
TOP OF WINTER STREET STUDIOS IN THE SAWYER YARDS COMPLEX? SHOT BY
CODY BESS AND STYLED BY MARZI PETRIS, THE TEAM CREATED A HOT SUMMER
FASHION FANTASY IN THE HEART OF HOUSTON. WHY "QUIERES CALOR" AS THE
SUBHEAD? IT STARTED AS AN INSIDE JOKE AMONG OUR STAFF BUT IT REALLY
COMMUNICATES OUR CITY'S DIVERSITY AND HEAT!
