It ’ s summertime and kids are out of school so it ’ s a perfect time for them to focus on what ignites their lives . I have been publishing a directory of summer day camps , THE SUMMER BOOK ® ONLINE : A GUIDE TO HOUSTON DAY CAMPS AND CLASSES ( www . thesummerbook . com ), so , since I write about films , I thought I ’ d unleash upon you my round-up of summer filmmaking camps .
“ Lights ! Camera ! Action ! Youth Media Camp ” is offered by Southwest Alternate Media Project / SWAMP ( www . swamp . org ) for teens 13 – 17 years old . Each oneweek camp begins on a Monday and concludes on Friday evening when the teens screen their movies for their parents , family and friends . My son has experienced that camp and it ’ s a free-wheeling , fun-for-all atmosphere in which kids get to learn all aspects of filmmaking while tapping into their creativity . The teacher is JENNIFER WALDO , a filmmaker and screenwriter who teaches at HCC and just finished up her short film , “ Acid Test .” The film kids get to team up with music kids who are attending the AFA ’ s ( www . afatexas . org ) film scoring program .
CAMILO GONZALES is the media arts instructor at the Aurora Picture Show ( www . aurorapictureshow . org ) and he brings his extensive experience as an artist , photographer and filmmaker to their popular Filmmaking Boot Camps , that are for kids 8 – 15 years . APS is known for screening offbeat , unique films so campers get to delve into their library of experimental , documentary and short narrative videos for inspiration . Kids will learn filmmaking from start to finish , and the finished films are screened for family and friends at a culminating showcase on August 13 at The Museum of Fine Arts , Houston .
CRESSANDRA THIBODEAUX is the owner of 14 Pews ( www . 14pews . org ) and a multitalented filmmaker , photographer , playwright , film editor and storyteller . Her enthusiasm for the arts is infectious when it comes to passing on her wisdom to teens which she does through the 14 Pews Film Academy that she created in 2012 . The Academy is offering two one-week documentary filmmaking summer workshops for kids 13 – 19 years old . Their student films will be screened at the Houston Cinema Arts Festival in November 2016 .
And , finally , there are also summer filmmaking camps offered by the Digital Media Academy at Rice University ( www . digitalmediaacademy . org / texas-tech-camps / rice /); iD Tech ( www . idtech . com ); Next Actor Studio ( http :// www . nextactor . com /); and Wonderworks ( www . wonderworkshouston . org ).
