IS TO RAISE CHILDREN WITH ART. Better yet, let children make art
and it will be sustained forever. The children of Houston are lucky
indeed because each summer they get to hang out with the staff of
professional arts organizations like the A.D. Players (www.ADPlayers.
org); Alley Theatre (www.AlleyTheatre.org); the Houston Grand
Opera/HGO (www.HoustonGrandOpera.org); and Main Street
Theater (www.MainStreetTheater.com). In the A.D. Players camps this

summer, kids will explore themes found in movies such as Zootopia
(accepting your inner animal) and Happy Feet (dancing to the beat
of your own drum). In the Alley Theater camps, kids work with pros
learning acting/improv, playmaking and movement/dance. Main
Street Theater offers a variety of camps for kids ages 4–18, includ-
ing one of my faves, a Shakespeare camp for older teens. This year
they are presenting Cymbeline: The Live Anime smashing together
the tale of the King of England with Japanimation. And in the HGO
camps, kids get to explore opera from all angles – their “Create an
Opera” camp for third through sixth graders lets kids be the authors/
directors/singers and ends with their own production onstage.
