LETTER FROM THE EDITOR

Happy New Year !

Well , it ’ s finally here … the 51 st Super Bowl . And the A to Z Issue .
I have to admit that when we first decided that the entire January issue was going to be about the game and all the prep and activities around it , I wasn ’ t 100 % enthusiastic . I didn ’ t think we could fill an entire magazine with Super Bowl stories . But guess what ? We did . And I think this issue is really great .
It ’ s particularly great due to our guest contributors – broadcasting pros and longtime sports anchors LISA MALOSKY and BUTCH ALSANDOR , and also because of the incredible effort the Super Bowl Host Committee ( led by RIC CAMPO and yes , he ’ s in this issue , too ) put into creating a high-energy , multifaceted , multilocation environment for visitors and Houstonians alike . They ’ re expecting more than one million people to visit Super Bowl LIVE at Discovery Green over the course of Super Bowl week . Fun fact : That ’ s double the attendance of last year ’ s fan fest in San Francisco .
Also in this issue : Texans GM RICK SMITH , radio host DEVI BROWN , movie
maven SARAH GISH and all the latest community , art , food and style news . Plus , JANICE SCHINDELER takes us to Arthur Ave , JAYME LAMM takes us back in time
to Houston ’ s past Super Bowl hostings , MIKE COOK exposes The Secret Group , BRIAN TAGTMEIER dines around the town and CARLA VALENCIA goes to a new
all-inclusive luxury resort in Cabo .

Thank you to our team of writers and photographers for , once again , showing the best of Houston from A to Z .

BEHIND THE COVER
What image could we use to communicate the excitement and preparation of our city for the Super Bowl ? That was the challenge we gave ourselves this month … and then it came us : the tunnel out of the locker room at NRG . Photographer Sofía van der Dys perfectly captured the sense of anticipation we ’ re all feeling . The biggest obstacle we had that day was keeping the field free of people ; it turned out it was Super Bowl Field Day and there were hundreds of fans on the field . Working with the Texans staff , we were able to briefly clear the field for that one magical moment where Sofía got her shot .
