STYLE + LEISURE MILES DAVID ATELIER Nobody can tell you the highs and lows of running your own business better than David Peck. This past October David closed the doors on his namesake, finding himself in one of the lowest lows of entrepreneurship: filing for Chapter 11. As the saying goes, though, behind every cloud there’s a silver lining, giving David the opportunity to re-brand thanks to the generosity and faith of an anonymous investor, giving us MILES DAVID ATELIER just in time for the holidays. While the road to re-branding wasn’t easy, Houston excelled at one of the things that sets us apart: the way Houstonians come together and rally around someone like David. Say what you will sometimes about Houston, but rallying is what we do and we do it very well. In speaking with David, he was overwhelmed and deeply touched by the outpouring of belief in him and his new venture. From phone calls, to social media, to those who collaborated on his opening events, everyone wants David to have the opportunity to rise again. The launch of Miles David, aptly named combining Peck’s family history with their investor’s passion for jazz innovator (and arbiter of style) – Miles Davis. David is looking forward to cultivating more accessible pieces with price points aimed at bringing his designs into the hands of even more Houstonians, while still offering one-of-a-kind items for those wanting a one-of-a-kind feel. I asked David what advice he would give to his past and future selves (so listen up, Houston entrepreneurs): To his past self: Respect yourself more. Understand and listen to your inner voice; it’s probably trying to tell you something. To his future self: Don’t be afraid to say no. Adaptability is key! Don’t let fear dictate your path. Learn to let go, knowing you are not defined by what you were/what you are, but by what you can try to be. By Beth Levine Image courtesy of Miles David 64 L O C A L | january 16
