LETTER FROM THE EDITOR
Welcome to the Business Issue of LOCAL Houston magazine .
The business of Houston is , well , business . From start-ups through multinational corporations ( we ’ re second only to New York in those headquarters ), Houston ’ s can-do attitude , business-friendly climate and spirit of cooperation make this city a business engine like no other . Meet someone in Houston and likely their first question is , “ What do you do ?” The second is , “ Do you know XYZ ? I can introduce you .”
It ’ s that spirit of “ we ’ re all in this together ” that makes Houston a great place to find your fortune , however you define it . In this issue , we meet the new faces of Houston business , from DEAN PETER RODRIGUEZ of the Jesse H . Jones School of Business at Rice University , to AIDA ARAISSI of the U . S . Bilateral Arab Chamber of Commerce , to financial author and broadcaster MONICA MEHTA , who advises us to invest in ourselves . You ’ ll also learn about alumni from the Goldman Sachs 10,000 Small Businesses program and experience the hope and excitement generating at Station Houston , a co-working incubator .
As always , we ’ ve got all the food ( another enormous Houston business ) coverage , the arts , style , fashion ( Marzi kills it this month ), community news , film recommendations and more that balance out our workdays . And , in “ Things We Love ,” get to know the one and only WALTER BERING , whose family has developed much of Houston and who continues on as one of Houston ’ s leading realtors . You may be surprised .

BEHIND THE COVER
Houston never seems to stop building . We ’ re truly the city of ideas that constantly come to fruition . For the cover , Hines graciously lent us their architectural models , and their office , to create an image of vision becoming reality . By compositing two shots by photographer Anthony Rathbun , art director German Arellano was able to design a bold representation of a city that is always in transition .
