Masterworks by Michelangelo and his contem-
poraries highlight the artistic legacy of Pope
Paul III and the vital role that drawing played
in art production throughout Europe in the
late 15th and 16th centuries. Michelangelo
and the Vatican features drawings, cartoons,
paintings, sculpture and prints by Renaissance
master Michelangelo and his predecessors
and successors, including Raphael, Rubens,
Tintoretto and Titian. Largely drawn from the
renowned collection of the Capodimonte
Museum in Naples, Italy, the exhibition pres-
ents some 40 works from the 16th century,
many commissioned or completed during the
papacy of Alessandro Farnese, Pope Paul III. In this exhibition, Libbie Masterson will use
glass and music to create an immersive instal-
lation that explores the similarities between
the visible and aural spectrums. Dividing light
allows us to see the different colors of the
visible spectrum the same way we can hear
notes of the musical scale. In this installation,
you will experience the wavelengths of these
spectrums, and explore your relationship to
certain combinations of color and sound. Snakes. Spiders. Sharks. The things you fear
are the least of your worries! Death by Natural
Causes will introduce patrons to the range
of “animal, vegetable and mineral” dangers
that lurk in their everyday lives. Through a
collection of specimens, text and interactives,
visitors can see what can cause a death, either
directly or indirectly, from the natural world.
Poisonous, venomous and toxic are just a few
of the terms that will be clarified, and things
you interact with almost daily will be used as
examples—mushrooms, snakes, spiders and
even common foods!
