What are you looking forward to the most in retirement?
Besides sleeping, helping Barbara pull weeds out of her gardens is definitely in my future. I will also
enjoy having time to read. I also need to be brought into the 21st century in regard to being able
to type and use this damn computer!
What do you see in the future for the Texas Medical Center?
My career benefited greatly from being in the TMC. The ability to do my studies with the patients in
our hospitals gave me an opportunity to study the processes of microembolization and blood filtration
in people with numbers that other investigators could not do elsewhere. However, young clinical
investigators now will not have the research support that my generation did. Funding for research is
not as generous, and because of this and the need for them to support themselves with clinical
responsibilities, they may not have time to do meaningful research. However, just the vast size and
commitment to health care in the TMC bodes a successful future.
Does seeing patients return to wellness and seeing students become successful
in their careers give you the same sense of accomplishment?
Clearly, yes to both questions. Many of the students and house staff I have helped train are now
teaching and practicing here in the TMC. One of the advantages I had in teaching in the TMC is
that I managed to get away from Texas, gain a new perspective of the practice of medicine and
then return to share it. I hope that more of our students go away and bring similar experiences back.

What “rules of healthful living” would you like to share with our readers?
As a Clinical Professor of Medicine with an interest in the lungs, my major comment to my patients
over years has been “DO NOT SMOKE!”
