A Step Forward in Computerised Limbs
A
lthough computer-controlled
limbs have been restoring mobility
to people for years, the movement of
these devices is nowhere near equal
to the the intricacy of a natural gait.
Recently, however, the researchers at
Michigan Technological University have
taken a giant step toward achieving this
kind of mobility in a computerised limb.
According to these scientists the
secret lies in the ankle. Mo Rastgaar,
an Assistant Professor of Mechanical
Engineering and PhD student Evandro
Ficanha are presently working on a
microprocessor-controlled ankle-foot
prosthesis that comes close to achieving
the innate range of motion accomplished by this complex joint.
The computerised artificial legs have
pressure-sensitive sensors at the bottom
of the foot that detect how the amputee
