This new line of ultraviolet (UV), visible and nearinfrared (NIR) CW lasers integrates laser head and controller into a single, compact package.  Available as freespace and fibre-coupled laser configurations, the plug-and-play Excelsior One series includes 11 different wavelengths and delivers up to 500mW of average power. For added convenience, the integrated lasers utilise only one supply voltage for all models. They are ideal for use in flow cytometry, confocal microscopy and DNA sequencing. “Featuring true modularity with an integrated, single footprint across a broad selection of wavelengths, power levels and configurations, the Excelsior One lasers are perfect for customers who need f lexibility in configuring their instruments, even for upgrades or reconf ig urations in the f ield,” states Jürgen Niederhofer, General Manager for Spectra-Physics. The Excelsior One product family includes direct diode and diodepumped solid-state (DPSS) technology in a consistent compact footprint with a common electronics interface. To do this, the SIMDOS 02 FT is fitted with a PTFE head, a PTFE-covered diaphragm and chemically resistant FFKM Kalrez® valves. A Chemraz ®-valve kit allows the pump to be used with highly concentrated acids such as nitric, sulphuric and hydrochloric acids, and solvents such as TFH, DMF, DMSO and MEK. The pump head is situated outside t he spla sh-protec ted IP-65 housing, providing a very signif icant safety feature. Also available with heads in PP or PVDF, this FT dosing pump transfers liquids with a flow rate of 30µl to 20ml/min, and dose volumes of 30µl up to 999ml. Following calibration, repeatability is ±1% (full range) and the pump offers excellent long-term stability throughout the entire process. It is safe to run dry and is self-priming up to 2m. It is effective against pressures of up to 6bar and transfers viscous media up to 150 centistokes. The integrated software permits the transfer parameters to be modified Spectra-Physics’ It ’s In the Box ™ design, where the laser cavity and control electronics are integrated into single, compact housing. All lasers deliver TEM00 mode quality and very low optical noise for highest signalto-noise ratio. The DPSS models are available in single or multi-longitudinal mode versions. Easy to configure, the direct diode models include high-speed modulation and an RS 232 interface. ? In addition, a specially designed airhandling system and liquid nitrogen ring work in tandem for precise temperature control and uniformity. There is an over-temperature protection on heating element and audible indicators alert the operator when the hold time has elapsed. An important consideration when freezing samples for long-term storage is the proper attention to the type of vessel, accessories, volume, program and control. Thermo Scientific has what they call ‘smart notes’, with useful information on controlled-rate freezing and its applications. ?
