of Food and Agricultural Sciences, explains that plant materials serve three distinct functions in a landscape design. The purpose of plant materials can be either aesthetic, structural or utilitarian. The aesthetic functions of plant materials, often as diverse as the end user themselves, provides a visual appeal while structural plant materials organize and design the space. Plant materials serve a utilitarian purpose by serving as (1) barriers that provide privacy, safety, or shielding from noise and light pollution, (2) food sources for wildlife, and (3) a psychological comfort that allows the end user the opportunity to destress.
The notion of using plant materials that create or enhance sounds in a landscape design has attracted the attention of the University of Washington's College of Environment. In the article, Mental Health and Function, there is a discussion regarding the merits of Heraclitean motion. Heraclitean motion are movement patterns considered to be associated with safety, tranquility, calmness and a stable mental state such as the soft rhythmic movements of trees or grasses in a slight breeze.
