Mr Figg is co-founder and a principal in the Washington, DC law firm of Rothwell, Figg, Ernst & Manbeck, P.C. He specializes in intellectual property law, primarily involving the chemical, pharmaceutical, healthcare and biotechnology industries. His practice focuses on patent litigation and interferences, reexaminations, patent procurement, intellectual property licensing and related contract matters, opinions and counselling. Mr Figg has served as lead counsel in a large number of complex patent litigations in federal district courts, the International Trade Commission, and the Board of Patent Appeals and Interferences, as well as in appeals before the US Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit and the Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit. He litigated some of the first cases arising out of the Drug Price Competition and Patent Term Restoration Act of 1984 (the “so-called” Hatch-Waxman amendments) and continues to handle a large number of such cases. Mr Figg has served as chair of the Section of Intellectual Property Law (IPL) of the American Bar Association (ABA), the largest organization of patent attorneys in the world. He also served a four-year term on the IPL Section’s Council and has chaired several of its divisions and committees. He notably chaired the IPL Section’s Patent Law Reform Task Force for several years. He also has served on the ABA’s Standing Committee on Amicus Curiae Briefs and is a former member of the ABA’s Coordinating Committee on Bioethics. He is a member of the American Intellectual Property Law Association, the Executive Committee of AIPPI United States, the District of Columbia Bar and its Intellectual Property Law Section, and the Licensing Executives Society. Mr Figg has been inducted as a fellow in the American College of Trial Lawyers and has been elected a fellow of the American Bar Foundation. He was selected as a leading intellectual property attorney in Best Lawyers in America, and was that publication’s designated “Washington, DC intellectual property lawyer of the year” in 2011. For several years, he has been listed among Washington’s best IP lawyers in The Washingtonian and also has been recognised frequently in the Washington DC Super Lawyers list, published by Law & Politics, as well as in The International Who’s Who of Patent Lawyers. For the second straight year, Mr Figg was ranked in the IAM Patent 1000 -- The World’s Leading Patent Practitioners 2013 guide as a “Washington, DC Metro Area Gold Band Litigator, one that attracts the most positive comments from third-party sources.” Surveyed peers noted he "is a big name in the biotech and pharma sectors, and has long been at the vanguard of patent litigation in the life sciences arena. Mr Figg received a J.D. degree from Indiana University School of Law and a B.S. in chemistry from Rose Polytechnic Institute (now RoseHulman Institute of Technology). He is admitted to practise before the Bar of the District of Columbia, the US Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit, US Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit, and the US Supreme Court. Mr Figg is also registered to practice before the US Patent and Trademark Office.
