This includes patent and trade-mark litigation, trade-mark opposition proceedings, patent and trade-mark clearance and validity opinions, trade-mark registration, international portfolio management and intellectual property licensing and transactions. Bill’s main areas of practice are related to the life sciences and he has extensive experience advising pharmaceutical companies with respect to IP and regulatory issues, including with respect to the Patented Medicines (Notice of Compliance) Regulations. A registered Canadian Patent and Trade-mark Agent, Bill sits on the executive of AIPPI Canada and is a member of AIPPI’s Communications Committee. He is a regular speaker on intellectual property issues and is recognized as a leader in intellectual property in the 2013 edition (as well as the 2010, 2011, 2012 and 2013 editions) of Chambers Global: The World’s Leading Lawyers for Business, and as one of the best Canadian patent lawyers by Who’s Who Legal and in the 2013 edition of The Best Lawyers in Canada (Woodward/White). Bill has been involved in a number of important intellectual property litigation cases. In 2007, Bill, along with his colleagues Jon Stainsby and Mark Davis, received international recognition from Managing Intellectual Property magazine for their work on Sanofi-Aventis Inc. v. Novopharm Ltd., 2007 FCA 163, the Canadian IP Case of the Year. Bill Mayo joined Heenan Blaikie in 2002. Prior to that, he practised intellectual property law with firms in Toronto and Ottawa and as inhouse IP counsel at Newbridge Networks.
