LIFE CYCLE FIRMS PRACTICE GROUP ANALYSIS Practice Group Overview WilmerHale Boston-based, intellectual property powerhouse WilmerHale has established itself as one of the most-accomplished life sciences firms for its success in IP matters. And IP litigation is where WilmerHale really shines. “When you have as much success as they have had at the trial level in the industry, it is almost impossible not to be mentioned as one of the best law firms in the US,” says one attorney. Helping lead the distinguished practice is partner William Lee, a name always among the first mentioned when peers are asked to name the top patent litigators in the country. “He is an absolute icon within the industry and litigators everywhere strive to have the impressive resume that he has put together over his career” explains one rival. This year, Lee successfully represented Cephalon against generic drug manufacturer Watson Pharmaceuticals. A district court decision invalidating two patents covering Cephalon’s cancer pain medication Fentora was reversed on appeal in the Federal Circuit. Additionally, partner Colleen Superko is currently working on a team with David Bassett representing Braintree Laboratories in several ANDA patent litigations. “She is very underrated and she does a lot of the important work behind the scenes,” explains one of Superko’s colleagues. The firm’s litigation talents extend to its highly esteemed and battle tested government investigation group. Expertise in False Claim Act and criminal defense litigation has helped partner Karen Green become one of the industry’s top attorneys. Green, who is viewed by competitors as “a superb attorney who litigates on sensitive matters,” was lead counsel in WilmerHale’s representation of Wright Medical Technology in a matter involving the breach of a Deferred Prosecution Agreement (DPA). Green helped Wright dismiss the criminal complaint over the breach after restructuring the DPA. Not to be outdone by the firm’s litigation talent is its strength in the corporate space. “There is no shortage of litigation expertise at the firm, but they also employ some of the best deal making attorneys in the country,” raves one peer. Partners David Redlick and Steven Singer are co-chairs of the life sciences practice group and are extremely active in corporate matters throughout the industry. Redlick works on a lot of financing deals for startup to mid-market companies, including his representation of TransMedics in a venture financing deal valued at $36 million. This past year, Singer represented Alnylam Pharmaceuticals in its strategic collaborations with GlaxoSmithKline and with Arrowhead Research Corporation.
