Dr. Jorge A. Goldstein is a founding director of intellectual property specialty law firm Sterne, Kessler, Goldstein & Fox PLLC., is the head of its Biotechnology Practice Group and was the managing director of the firm for many years. He is considered by his peers and clients to be one of the country’s pioneers in biotechnology patent law. He has more than 30 years of experience in the preparation and prosecution of patent applications before the US and foreign patent offices in scientific areas such as genomics, molecular and cell biology, recombinant DNA technology, immunology, transgenics, therapeutic methods, stem cells, as well as organic synthesis, pharmaceuticals, and polymers. He heads the firm’s interference practice and has handled multiple and varied interferences over many years, including successful appeals to the Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit. He chairs the firm’s Inventorship Dispute Resolution Service, and serves as a Neutral Mediator/Arbitrator as part of Ocean Tomo’s ADR Service. He has also been involved in oppositions, arbitrations, in District Court and in Appellate litigation both as counsel and expert witness, and in counseling clients on intellectual property strategy, trade secrets, licensing, research contracts, university-industry relations, federal licensing, due diligence, acquisitions, and employment agreements. He was lead counsel in the 1988 appellate case of In re Wands et al. 8 USPQ2d 1400 (Fed. Cir.), a pivotal decision on biotechnology enablement requirements. Dr. Goldstein has a Ph.D. in chemistry from Harvard University and has done post-doctoral research at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in the area of biochemistry, with an emphasis on enzymology. He has published and lectured internationally on patent law, industryuniversity relations, patent interference practice, patent pools, and several biotechnology and bioinformatics topics. He maintains an active pro bono practice dealing mostly with indigenous rights and biodiversity prospecting in the developing world. He is fluent in Spanish and German and proficient in several other languages.
