For the past 25 years, volunteers
have met on the third Saturday in
June to clean trash from the river.
The Clean Sweep is certainly an
important event: The Kentucky
River, in addition to being one of
Kentucky’s greatest natural resources, serves as Lexington’s source of
drinking water. Volunteers with the
Clean Sweep work hard to collect
and properly dispose of litter found
on the river’s banks, including tires,
appliances, bottles, cans and other
trash.

Keep Lexington Beautiful, a
city commission of volunteers and
an affiliate of the national Keep
America Beautiful organization,
has a simple goal for Lexington:
for individuals, businesses and
government to understand that it
is each and every one’s personal
responsibility to take care of our
