From 1977-1980, Macy played basketball for the University of Kentucky under the leadership of Coach Joe B. Hall after playing his freshman year at Purdue. After sitting out one year, as stipulated by NCAA rules, Macy started for Kentucky in 1977. In 1978, Kentucky won the NCAA National Championship, and the year after, Macy was named SEC Player of the Year.
