The Grandparents As Parents (GAP) conference is open to any interested person. This includes grandparents or anyone assuming care of children not their own, as well as those interested in learning about topics related to kinship care. Continuing education units for professionals are offered in social work, law and FRYSC hours. Other workshops include help with children and youth who have experienced trauma; how to identify the signs of drug and alcohol use in youth; how to keep children safe; and using social media responsibly. There will also be a workshop offering an update on Kentucky legislation impacting kinship families and an update on Kentucky’s Kinship Care Program. A workshop addressing the special concerns of the caregiver will be led by Dr. Matt Lee, clinical director of Nicholasville KORT. With his mantra “Movement is Medicine,” Lee will discuss the relationship between health and function, as well as community resources for wellness and exercise. Volunteer attorneys will be available at the conference to provide free consultations about guardianship, custody, child support and related legal issues to grandparents and other relatives raising children. The 30-minute consultations will be for information and advice only. The lawyers are not making a commitment to represent anyone in court on any matter by providing the consultation. Registration is $5 (this includes lunch). The registration fee for professionals registering for social work continuing education credits, FRYSC training hours or continuing legal education credits is $50.
