Devastated by the turn of events in her life, Veronica was at
the lowest point of her life. One day as she sat alongside the
road, she was approached by Kigoi, a representative from the
dōTERRA sourcing team, who asked if she would like to harvest
pink pepper for the company. He gave her an advance to buy
food for her family and to pay for her children to attend school.
Veronica returned the next day with a large amount of pink
pepper she had harvested. She now earns seven to eight times
the amount she earned before and has moved her children into
a larger home. They now enjoy meals that consist of fresh fruits,
vegetables, and meat. She has even been able to purchase a
donkey that she rents out to her neighbors as an additional
source of income. Her children are all attending school and their
future is bright. Her oldest son is now preparing for university.
Because of the sustainability of her income, Veronica is able to
plan a future for herself and her family. She has inspired many
women in her community to become harvesters as well and is
now a leader of her people.
The pink pepper trees in Kenya are mature, well-nurtured trees
that originally were planted for shade along the roadsides and
in gardens. dōTERRA sources Pink Pepper from Kenya as well
as the Andes Mountains of Peru. We have found the chemical
profile of these two sources to not only be unique, but to
contain the most therapeutic properties when blended.
OLD SOURCE, NEW INCOME
For hundreds of years, pink pepper trees have been growing
indigenously on the mountains of Peru. To the locals these
beautiful trees have been a source of shade for many
generations and, in this ideal climate, they have grown to great
heights. Without help from humans, these trees have become
massive, fruit-producing plants and can be found growing on
many small family farms throughout Peru.
dōTERRA set out to work with these small-scale farmers to create
a network of harvesters for pink pepper. By working directly with
farm owners, up-front costs have been eliminated, resulting in a
win-win relationship for dōTERRA and the harvesters.
The most unique aspect of harvesting pink pepper in Peru is its
year-round harvest. The trees have been growing so long they
produce more fruit than the harvesters can begin to pick. The
advantage of picking the fruit throughout the year means a
steady source of income for these small-scale farmers. With this
additional income, they are able to send their children to school.
MIRACLES DURING DISASTER
Through dōTERRA Cō-Imapct® efforts, an oil distillery was
established in Guatemala to produce Pink Pepper and other
essential oils. Equipped with native expertise on how to best
process the plant to retain the full potency of its properties, the local
workers are invaluable to the production of Pink Pepper oil.
On June 3, 2018, the largest and most devastating volcanic
eruption in 100 years occurred in Guatemala City, Guatemala,
resulting in what many feared would be the end of the distillery.
Hundreds of people were killed and many more lost their
homes from the violent volcano. Many people were injured
and many lost loved ones in the wreckage. When dōTERRA
visited this country, looking for ways to help, they discovered a
surprising bright spot in the midst of the turmoil.
Upon arriving at the partner distillery in Guatemala, instead of being
covered in ash and soot as the surrounding areas were, the distillery
was completely untouched by the volcanic eruptions. It was as if
there was an invisible shield protecting it. Every part of the distillery
was clean and the facility was ready to be put in use. dōTERRA
reached out to the Guatemalan government and received special
permission to reopen the factory during the disaster. Because of this
small miracle, many distillery workers were able to keep their jobs,
while many around them were not as fortunate.
