Suburbia West: The Allure of 6 of October A curious combination of high end, working class and middle-income housing, 6 of October City is perhaps Cairo’s most self-contained satellite city. The suburb, which has traditionally attracted residents of the western parts of the city, was briefly the capital of the short-lived 6 of October Governorate, and is today part of the Giza governorate. Conceived in 1978 under the presidency of Anwar El Sadat, 6 of October City was one of many projects (like El Sadat City, 10th of Ramadan City and El Obour City) built to create industrial cities and diffuse Cairo’s population density. Fringed by Abu Ruwash on Cairo-Alexandria Desert Road on one end and by the Oases Road on the other, the area has grown horizontally rather than vertically, with one of its main features being its self-contained employment opportunities.
