2.3.3 TRAFFIC, MOBILITY AND
ACCESSIBILITY
Around the AAA is a belt of one-way roads,
which includes al-Tahrir Road, and both direc-
tions of al-Mehwer al-Markaziy that lead into
and out of the 6th of October district. Most
roads previously had two-way access but road
width and directions have been changed. Dur-
ing interviews, many complained that changed
road directions and one-way roads have be-
come a nuisance and are negatively affecting
the congestion problems in the area, as one
must make a longer journey to access the area.
For these reasons, many drivers disrespect road
direction regulations, causing obstructions
to traffic flow (Figure 23). The primary access
point to the AAA is named “Divided from al-
Tahrir” (Figure 24), a one-way road that con-
nects the southbound al-Mehwer al-Markazy
with al-Tahrir Road. Two other vehicular access
points exist through secondary dirt roads (Fig-
ure 25). Broken tiles and dirt roads challenge
the circulation and limit the accessibility to the
area. In addition, in the absence of ramps, the
great number of stairs and the difference in lev-
els inside and around malls make the accessibil-
ity hard for wheelchairs and strollers.
