5.4.3 AL-AMRIKIYYA MALL PAS- SAGE IMPROVEMENT Project Description The aim of this intervention is to improve the street section of the sidewalk adjacent to al-Amrikiyya 3 and 4 malls. This project is se- lected as it is also independent of the long-term interventions. The problem with this sidewalk is that it has a large area that is mismanaged and underused. If better organized, this sidewalk has the poten- tial to accommodate a larger diversity of activ- ities than the existing ones. Also, this area pro- vides a good location for street vendors as has a high footfall and provides possibilities of segre- gating them from the shops’ extensions. Hence, the design objective of this area is to re-design the sidewalk according to acceptable standards and street section guidelines, providing a more space-efficient solution that accommodates a variety of uses and users. Proposed Activities • Design the street section according to acceptable standards and international guidelines. • Improve the pedestrian circulation along the sidewalk. • Demarcate the different functions of pub- lic open space activities, including shop extensions, pedestrian paths, and street furniture. • Use affordable materials to avoid increas- ing the land value. • Increase street lighting and vegetation. • Relocate of the street vendors from the main internal street to this area. • Below are 3D (Figure 82, Figure 83) and 2D (Figure 84, Figure 85) illustrations of the 149 | INTERVENTION PROPOSALS proposed design intervention.
