5.4.1 LIVELIHOOD DEVELOP-
MENT PROGRAM
It is essential to implement a development pro-
gram that aims at the improvement of the live-
lihood of the users of the AAA, especially the
employees and street vendors. This develop-
ment program should include demand-driven
trainings to provide and enhance the market-
able skills of the business owners and employ-
ees for gainful employment. Also, it is recom-
mended to develop a management guide for
the street vendors of the AAA that regulates
and defines their rights and activities. This
guide includes the laws and regulations related
to them, the type of products they sell, and a
customized design for their carts relative to the
diverse type of products.
5.4.2 SIDEWALK IMPROVEMENT
OF THE AAA STREET
Project Description
Proposed Activities
• Design the street section according to
acceptable standards and international
guidelines.
• Improve the pedestrian circulation along
the sidewalk.
• Demarcate the different functions of public
open space activities, including shop exten-
sions, pedestrian paths, and street furni-
ture.
• Use affordable materials to avoid increas-
ing the land value.
• Increase street lighting and vegetation.
• Below are 3D (Figure 74, Figure 76) and
2D (Figure 76, Figure 77, Figure 78, Figure
79, Figure 80, Figure 81) illustrations of the
proposed design intervention.
Key Partners
Mall Managers, CA, and Shop owners/keepers
The aim of this intervention is to improve the
street section of the sidewalk adjacent to Zam-
zam, both Aly al-Deen, and Diamond shopping
malls. This project is selected as a short-term
intervention as it is independent of the long-
term interventions.
The challenge of this sidewalk is that the activ-
ities and functions taking place over it change
from one location to the other according to the
type of shop frontage. Hence, the design objec-
tive of this proposal is to re-design the sidewalk
according to acceptable standards and street
section guidelines, adapting with the diversity
of each type of shop frontage.
