Al-Amrikiyya Shopping Mall , after which the area is named , was one of the first buildings to meet this demand with its commercial activities on the lower floors and residential / administrative units on its upper floors . Four similar buildings , constituting consecutive phases of Al-Amrikiyyia Shopping Mall were developed along Al-Mehwer Al-Markazy and next to the university at a later stage . Al-Amrikiyyia Shopping Mall was a success as students began to visit it during the day for recreational purposes . Many of them chose to live there too .
Around the same period of time , Magda Shopping Mall was developed and started to operate at the corner of Al-Mehwer Al-Markazy and El-Tahrir Roads . Soon after , Diamond Shopping Mall was developed in the same area , with predominantly retail uses , and quickly became a major attraction for the entire city , as it was the biggest shopping mall in that region at the time . ( Figure 8 ) The area started to attract more residents ; especially Arab student coming to the 6th of October City to study at the university - giving the area its reputation as a multi-cultural zone .
