ANNA MAGNANI
isn’t careful to conquer people’s fondness”.
One of the greatest female interpreters of cinema history is Anna
Magnani (1908-1973), a versatile actress of an astonishing talent, fa-
mous for her dramatic roles of extraordinary intensity. She was the
first Italian personality to win an Oscar and she is one of the few ac-
tresses having a star in the “Walk of Fame”. She acts in important
films but refuses “La Ciociara” because she doesn’t want to perform
Sophia Loren’s mother, to whom initially was offered the role of the
daughter. The “tiger of Tevere” who came from Rome to Hollywood
had a troubled life. “Nannarella” will not meet her father, her mother
left her to her grandma’s cares, who, in spite of tight circumstances,
was able to send her to study at high school and Drama School.
Through the cinema she attempts to defeat the pain of abandon-
ment. “I chose this work because I wanted that love I had always
begged. I wasn’t born actress but I decided to become it in the cradle,
between a tear of too much and a caress of less”. Her love affairs
were troubled. In 1935 she gets married with the director Goffredo
Alessandrini from whom she will divorce for his betrayals. In 1942
she has a child with a young actor. In 1945 she reaches world success
with “Roma città aperta” by Roberto Rossellini with whom she starts
an overwhelming passion which will go to an end three years later.
Determined, passionate and charismatic, Anna Magnani is a woman
with a determined behaviour, inclined to jealousies and strong ac-
cesses of anger. She is the icon of Roman spirit and celebrity who
does not act like a star for excellence, praised by critics. American
press wrote: “in comparison with her our actresses are mannequins”,
Times described her as “simply divine”. Magnani wasn’t a sex symbol
as Loren and Lollobrigida, she wasnt’ beautiful, but magnificent: when

«Ho scelto questo me-
passione travolgente finita tre anni dopo.
