Black History Month
in Birmingham
Harmony House and Barbara Glasgow House in Birmingham
hosted a Black History Month event. More than 60 residents had
the pleasure of listening to music performed by Tropical Islanders,
a steel band trio who played traditional songs from the Caribbean.
There was a variety of mouth watering dishes to try, including
fried fish, jerk pork and barbeque chicken. The residents said
it was a brilliant day and they’d like to attend future events.
Iris Hughes has been
busy knitting toys, hats
and blankets for local
hospitals and causes,
including the Salvation
Army. The 81 year old,
from Christoper Court,
Birmingham, took up the
hobby after her favourite
hobby, gardening, became
too difficult. She says
she enjoys the challenge
despite suffering with
painful hands. She added:
“It keeps me out of mischief
and I get so much pleasure
seeing the end result.”
Residents and friends at Servite House, Old Oscott Hill, Birmingham,
danced the night away at their Halloween party. There was a DJ as
well as a bring and share buffet. Issy Harris, Scheme Manager, said:
“Everyone enjoyed themselves so much they didn’t want to go home!”
A big thank you to Louise
Campbell (pictured),
daughter of resident Inez
Pinnock, who cooked
for residents, family and
friends to raise money for
Macmillan Cancer Support.
The final total was £323.41!
