We Can and We DO Save the Day!

Kansas City University of Medicine and Bioscience's branch of Student American Academy of Osteopathy participates annually in performing camp physicals for the members and leaders of Boy Scout Troop 221, based out of St. Mary's Parish in Independence, Missouri. Lead by our fearless advisor, Dr. Kevin Treffer, DO, we are able to conduct around 50-60 physicals for this troop each spring. However, this past June, KCUMB's branch of SAAO received a distraught email from the scout leader of Troop 221 explaining that an unfortunate incident had occurred. Somehow, all previously completed camp physical forms from the recent May screening had been stolen along with the van they were being stored in. The troop leader made it clear that many of the boys, as well as the troop leaders were deeply saddened, thinking that this ill-timed circumstance meant they were now ineligible to attend the quickly approaching summer camp. As soon as our organization got wind of this, we refused to let it happen and began brainstorming logistics to re-perform physicals for all the campers. Within a day, I had received numerous, willing replies excited to take part in making these boys' summers a memorable one, and only a few short days later we were able to perform 45 camp physicals and ensured the summer camp would go on! At the conclusion of the event, immeasurable excitement and gratitude radiated from all members of the troop, especially the boys. Even after the event and throughout the

summer, I continued to receive many emails with pictures of the troop enjoying camp and its accompanying adventure activities. KCUMB's SAAO was happy to help out our community in this time of need and once again realized that no favor is ever too small. When compassion for mankind collides with a love of medicine, one finds that KCUMB's members of SAAO really DO save the day!
