"OMM and the

Pediatric Patient"

By Brian Scharfenberg, OMS I, OU-HCOM

National Representative

SAAO recently partnered with the Pediatrics Club here at OU-HCOM to present a workshop called “OMM and the Pediatric Patient.” The event was well attended and featured demonstrations with nine patients, aged five months to 10 years. Dr. David C. Eland, D.O., FAAO, Professor & Chair of the Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine Department, led the event. Highlights included Dr. Eland describing his approach to treating a squirming toddler, Leo, who enjoyed the treatment so much he caused spontaneous laughter by cooing his approval. The treatments included a number of techniques, including functional methods, cranial, muscle energy, and HVLA. Students were invited to share their own experiences of treating children and to ask questions about specific challenges they have faced while working with little ones. Feedback from participants was very positive, and the event has become an annual favorite at OU-HCOM. The young patients included several children of medical students and staff of the college. The children lifted everyone’s spirits and gave us a break from our typical patients—each other. We plan to offer this workshop again next spring. Leo wants another treatment from Dr. Eland.
