With the new year comes new years resolutions. And many times those resolutions have to do with getting in shape, staying fit and increasing ones physical activity. Thanks to MSUCOM’s administration, students here have had a head start in this area since August, and new years resolutions can lend their focus to other areas. At MSUCOM, 100 students from each class are granted free gym passes to the Michigan State University facilities and classes. This has been a wonderful gift from the school not only to keep us in shape, but to mentally rejuvenate and help get our minds off of school. A second year at MSUCOM, Maddi Massa comments, “I did not have a pass last year and after signing up for a pass this year I really appreciate all they offer to students. As an osteopathic student, I believe that it's important to embody the philosophy by taking care of your mind body, and soul. With the fit for life passes I feel as though I get all of that. The opportunity to attend exercise classes for free not only strengthens my body but my mind, and allows some bonding time with other students.” Another second year, Teresa Buicchoi, says “the passes are great because they provide the opportunity to release stress in a healthful way without depleting our wallets further (than the burden of tuition). It allows us to try new sports because of the facilities that are available, like swimming and tennis.”

Specifically, many members of the second year class have gotten involved with a spinning class that meets 2-3 times per week at 6:15 am. The music is lively and the atmosphere is fun, and Tom the instructor makes it worth our while to get up so early in the morning by hosting a fantastic class. As many as 20 MSUCOM students attend the class regularly. Lauren Anastos, a regular attendee at the spinning class says, “spinning has been a great outlet from class and studying. It’s a nice way to keep in shape, and the awesome part of it is getting to do it with other classmates. I think that because so many people attend, it creates a team atmosphere which is both fun and holds you accountable.” All of the MSUCOM students are grateful to our school for this wonderful opportunity. We are all excited to see what 2014 has in store for us especially with boards coming up for our second years. To all of the osteopathic schools, I wish you a happy 2014! Second years good luck with your board preparation - and remember, when stressed and burnt out, physical activity can be more important and beneficial than trying to push through more hours of studying.
