2.3 Staffing
Staffing plans were crucial for this event due to the importance of health and safety and potentially risky nature of sporting events (Clolery, 2014; Sport England, n.d.). Momentum Events consists of only 4 staff members so volunteers were a vital resource. Significant effort was put into the volunteer recruitment process, taking time to build personal relationships prior to the event (Event 360, 2015). Required volunteer numbers were calculated as 20, allowing for the highest average dropout rate of 25% (Booker, 2016; Shapiro, 2016). An advert was put out on multiple websites and subsequently 21 volunteers signed up, subsequently meeting the target but also highlighting room for future improvement. All staff and volunteers were fully briefed and given information packs including the key contact details, maps, role descriptions, schedule, health and safety plans and equipment lists.
