Most of us are aware of Nanowrimo, the famous writing month (November) in which a large community of writers, both published and unpublished, come together to encourage each other in their writing efforts. A big part of this is the in-person meetups and write-ins, where writers gather in coffee shops, bookstores, and libraries to write, of course, and also to share their work and find support and help in their endeavors. There is always a list online of places you can ‘write in’ during the month, either for specific days and or just any time it fits your schedule. Many writers find that writing somewhere outside the home is beneficial for a variety of reasons and find the need to remove themselves from any distractions that will keep them from meeting their creative goals if they don’t work elsewhere, not just during Nanowrimo but year round.

A Writing Retreat

By Cecily Wolfe

There is a common perception of a writer as someone working diligently on their laptop in a coffee shop, a cup of steaming coffee in hand, furiously typing with their eyes on the screen. I have several writer friends who swear by working at their local coffee shop, but they get annoyed when other people show up and talk. Well, that’s the trouble with coffee shops, book stores, and restaurants - other people come in and socialize or shop, none too quietly. There is nothing wrong with this, of course, unless you need a more quiet environment to get your work done.

Where in the world could you possibly go that might offer a quiet place, one where you can come in, use Wi-Fi, plug in your devices, and even stay without buying anything - not even a cup of coffee?
