FLORINDA SORTO ESL FOR FAMILIES MY MOTHER (AS TOLD TO HER DAUGHTER) My mother’s name was Hilda Sorto. My mother lived in El Salvador. She passed away in 1992. She was a friendly and humble person. She had short hair and she was very short. She had a big heart and she didn’t care if she didn’t eat as long as everyone ate before her. I remember we went to pay some bills and I was thirsty so my mother went to buy me a coke and I didn’t know that that was the only money she had left and she didn’t care spending it on me. I was very sad and I told her one day I would help her the same way she helped me. That was when I chose to come to this country to find a better future and work hard to help my mother and my siblings. I left everything I had to come to the United States because I knew I was going to have better opportunities, as do the millions of people that leave everything behind to have a better future. I love my country El Salvador but the United States is my home as well as the home of millions who are being separated from their families. I pray to God that everything changes for the better and not for the worse and this separation of families stops. Photo by Jake Thacker/Unsplash 7
