Level 6 The Importance of Recycling Recycling is the process of making old things usable again. Recycling is making the environment a cleaner place, conserving materials, saving energy, and reducing the amount of garbage in landfill. by Que Nguyen Most people take their trash to a dump and dispose of it. That way it takes years and years for it to decompose. For example, a glass bottle takes 1 million years to decompose. A plastic bottle takes 450 years to decompose. In my opinion about recycling. First of all, recycling saves trees, and protects wildlife habitat and biodiversity. Also, recycling reduces the use of toxic chemicals, helps curb global warming, and reduces water pollution. In addition, recycling reduces waste products in landfills because landfills are mostly composed of non- biodegradable waste which takes long time to decompose. By recycling we can lessen the waste materials that are placed into landfills, and we are able to make the most out of these materials. Finally, recycling creates jobs and promotes economic development. In my opinion, recycling is very important. It saves our natural resources, saves energy that it takes to make new products, cuts downs on the pollution and saves landfill space. 26
