Level 7
Difficult Days
by Cecilia Largaespada
I came to this country two years ago. I was nervous because I came by myself.
It was hard when I came at first because I lived in Cleveland, Ohio with an Indian
family. After a month, I moved to New York, a big and amazing city.
My new family was wonderful. They helped me learn English every day
as my hosts. She read books and taught me the alphabet. I was so happy because
my English was improving every day. I had many great moments with my new family.
I remember the first time I went to Manhattan, I felt excited. I
was so nervous that I was lost in the big city. I tried to ask people, but they didn’t
understand me because I did not speak English, so I started looking for someone
who spoke Spanish. Three hours passed by and I finally found someone who did. She
helped me find my way home.
Every weekend, I went to Manhattan to visit my aunt and visited
different museums and places. When I went to New York on the weekend, I met my
current husband. After eight months, we got married.
Once I got married, I moved to Washington, DC. I started going to
school and improved my English by going morning and night for one year. All the time,
I wanted to go to Carlos Rosario School, but I didn’t have the opportunity to go there.
I applied. They called me and told me that they had the space for me to go. I got
into level seven and I have been going every evening. I am happy because I have
everything I want: my husband, his family and an opportunity to improve my life
