Le ve l 2 My First English Experience Ten years ago, when I came to this country, my mom told me, “Daughter, you have to study English. You can work as a teacher like you did in your country.” I liked that idea, so I started to look for somewhere to study English. I found one place. It was a small school like Carlos Rosario but in Maryland. I heard about Carlos Rosario School in Washington, DC, but it was too far. I decided to study in Timbrook in Maryland. On the first day my mother came with me. I felt very happy when I started to study. I needed to get home so I went to the bus stop near the school. One bus came and I saw the words, “NOT IN SERVICE.” I did not understand these words at that time and I thought this is the bus I must get on to arrive home. When I got in, the driver told me, “I am sorry. The bus is not in service.” But in my brain I thought “NOT IN SERVICE” was the name of the place. The driver asked again, “Where are you going?” and I told him, “Wheaton.” He told me, “You have to take another bus from across the street and wait a moment and you will see 30
