Pro surfing returned to Burleigh Heads late in January for the first ever WSL
(formerly the ASP) contest in Australian history and the event didn’t fail to impress,
attracting some big hitting surfers despite the modest prize pool.
Qualifying points seemed to be as valuable or
more than prize money and the competition
was intense despite the average conditions.

Dominating throughout the event following
his first year on the Championship Tour,
Gold Coaster Mitch Crews took the title over
local favourite and perennial
Burleigh surfing legend Jay
‘Bottle’ Thompson.
In the women’s Dimity
Stoyle cleared her rivals
and pocketed $2000 for
her handy work. Great to
see companies like Vissla
and Scoot getting down for
supporting this event, which
was built on the skeleten of
the former Breaka Pro. Can’t
wait to see them score waves
for this in the coming years
- the 21st century version of
the Stubbies is back!
