1. P assionate surfer, singer, songwriter and producer, Mat McHugh from surf-tribe outfit The Beautiful Girls, slammed down a six-pack for LiQUiFY before their Summer Soundsystem Tour kicks it in January. It follows a busy couple of months including a national tour to air their new album Dancehall Days – not only the first from them in four years, but also independently released and a direct result of crowd-funding from fans who were frothing to have their brand of surf/folk/indie rock back in their lives. As Mat puts it, the band’s hiatus has resulted in an album that’s about reclaiming his musical identity with a brand new sound of ‘Spooky, dubby, digital dancehall tinged, rootsy, punky, reggae music mashed up with some mellow acoustic sea songs.’ The Beautiful Girls turn on a stellar performance to a sold-out crowd at Union Hall // Photo Supplied Can you tell us where you are right now and what you’ll be up to this Christmas and summer? I’ve just finished up the album tour, so I’m back home and I’m taking the chance to chill out and do as little as possible. I’ll be fine tuning the band over the next few weeks, and gearing up for the Summer Soundsystem Tour and also doing a couple of secret shows around Sydney. I’ve also been doing a little busking and jumping in with a couple of friends’ bands here and there, too.
