Um yeah I’ve done it once. It was a school trip
and I just got on the coach and didn’t really
know where we ended up but it was in England.
I had a wetsuit and I actually really enjoyed it
and I’m really sad I never got to do it again –
and I think I was quite good actually although
I do remember looking down and seeing a
boy’s head underneath my surfboard um which
wasn’t great for making new friends …
Was there anything you got out of this trip to
Australia – any new musical ideas or styles
that you picked up?
Yeah definitely, there’s some really great music
coming out of Australia at the moment. Yeah all
the people at home were quite jealous about us
coming over and seeing all these great bands
like Tame Impala, Pond and The Growl and all
those bands, in that little clique if you will, are
just doing something which is really enviable
and it’s brilliant for other guitar bands. I know
most of my friends in guitar bands back home
are really admiring what they’re doing and all
attempting to do it themselves but no one can
quite touch on what they have right now, and
having watched both of them this weekend,
I’m just so excited to go home and make more
music – I found them very inspiring and lovely
people as well, which was nice.
Other bands must be envious of the diversity
you put out and you don’t seem to have any
style boundaries – was that the plan or the
way it’s just unfolded?
Yeah we didn’t ever plan it but I can’t imagine
it going any other way. I can only speak for
myself but I think the four of us didn’t set out
to be in any particular band – maybe it’s part of
our generation – I like writing as many songs as
possible whether I’m angry one day or sad one
day or just watched a documentary on Sonic
Youth and was inspired – it’s natural to just be
diverse and take things from different things if
that makes sense?
Anything else you’d like to add?
Tell Splendour to have us back – we had a
great time!
