on to a website, promoting myself doing oneon-one shoots.”
But this was no fairytale … “News Flash! Doing
surf photography this way is shit. Lots of
people try and shaft you out of money and you
spend a shitload of time editing and running
around for not much money in return.
“On the plus side, I did gain a heap of valuable
experience and made a lot of good friends. I
also saw a lot of memorable sights of firing
cyclone perfection and world class surfers
like Julian Wilson and Wade Goodall to name
a few. It enabled me to get my first published
shot, which living in an area with so much
photographic talent spurred me on to reach for
more.
“But, most importantly, it also kept me pushing
myself through my sickness, pushing me to
stay in work, pushing me to get out of the
house, providing me with stoke again and
helping me try and understand and manage
the best I could with my health. I truly believe
photography literally saved me from a horrible
existence … and/or no existence at all.”
Four years later, Peter is married, has a son,
and is much healthier thanks to a simple blood
test solving a 12-year mystery.
“When I reflect on my experience I realise
I wouldn’t change it for the world, as it has
taught me so much and has shaped me into
the person I am today. I would hate to think
what I would have become otherwise, being
stuck in the shitty corporate grind, chained
to a desk whilst being barked at from a pencil
pusher.” //
