Dr. Dre // Compton: A Soundtrack by Dr. Dre
(Out Now, Aftermath/Interscope)
Dre’s self-proclaimed ‘last album ever’ was all hype ahead of its August 7th
release - and we picked it up that day knowing the hype would likely be justified.
Compton? Damn this is an incredible album straight outta the box, infusing a
densely woven tapestry of phonic production that spans decades of styles,
sounds, social character, Los Angeles persona and hardness. We just couldn’t
put it down. As per usual, Andre Romelle Young outshines most in the role of
producer bringing together the ultimate dream team of rappers, writers, studio
people and ideas to create his soundtrack - inspired by the recent recording and
release of the 2015 biopic mega movie Straight Outta Compton.
The list is epic, with production and mixing at several recording studios handled
by a massive cast of talent including Dr. Dre, Best Kept Secret, Bink, BMB
SpaceKid, Cardiak, Choc, Curt Chambers, DJ Dahi, Dem Jointz, Dontae Winslow,
D.R.U.G.S Beats, Focus..., Free School, DJ Khalil, DJ Silk, DJ Premier, Theron
Feemster and Trevor Lawrence Jr.
The album features devastatingly good lyricism from artists such as fellow N.W.A
brethren Ice Cube, Kendrick Lamar, Snoop Dogg, Xzibit, Eminem, The Game and
more. Eminem’s ferocious and ever-ascending delivery on the track Medicine Man
is beyond dope. The album is classic post-modern LA hip hop at its finest, drenched
in maturity, definition and purpose whilst paying homage to its traditional gangster
rap roots. This should clear the dust off your 6X9s and 15inch woofer with ease!
The album backed it up as well and debuted at number one in Australia, Canada,
Belgium, Holland, New Zealand, Scotland, the UK and Ireland but just missed it in the
USA, going number two on the Billboard and number one on the Billboard R&B/Hip
Hop charts. Check the film trailer below for Straight Outta Compton, in theatres now!
