THE WATER IN DAMS

•Pollutants in rivers and streams

Dirt is a big cause of pollution in our rivers and streams. Rain washes dirt into streams and rivers. Most of the dirt washing into lakes and streams comes from exposed earth.

This exposed earth includes plowed fields, construction sites, and areas that have been logged or mined. The solution is to stop the dirt from getting into the stream in the first place by disturbing the land as little as possible.

The two most common nutrients found in water are nitrogen and phosphorus. They cause algae to grow and can turn the water green. The major sources of nutrients are runoff of fertilizers from farms and lawns, animal waste, sewage treatment plants, and septic systems.

•Boiling Water: Place the water you wish to purify into a pot. Place it on the stove and turn the stove on to high. When water boils, any bacteria that may have been living in it will be killed, thus ensuring that you do not get sick when you drink the water.

•Use purification tablets or drops: Iodine tablets are the most commonly sold purifying tablets, but you can also use chlorine tablets with the same result. These chemical tablets will kill bacteria living in your water.

•Use a pump purifier. You can use these types of purifiers in conjunction with a canteen or water bottle when out in the wilderness.
