THE LION'S ROAR

NOVEMBER 2021

Communication is one of the greatest tools we have available to us as the part of Creation made in God’s own image.  It is important that we all communicate with one another in ways that intentionally convey our high value of others.  This can be very hard to do when we are upset or feel emotional about a situation.  There are a few things that we each can do to use communication to convey our commitment to representing well the Kingdom of God to others around us.  This is especially important when faced with conflict.

First, assume the best of the one with whom we are communicating.  State our appreciation for the other person and our desire to gain understanding.  If we have no relationship with the person yet, we must introduce ourselves and summarize how we are connected to one another.  This helps to set the stage of mutual interest—that we are on “the same team.”

Second, we must remember that none of us is perfect.  We will all make mistakes, and we will sadly let others down more often than we ever intend.  We must convey that we understand this about one another, but we also know that as members of the Body of Christ we can help one another grow through our mistakes.

Third, we must be willing to take our concerns directly to the one causing our concern.  When we talk with others first, it takes much longer (and can be destructive) than if we first go to the person who knows the most about a situation.  This is biblical and always offers the greatest opportunity for Kingdom-style resolutions.

Finally, if we find ourselves still in disagreement or unable to understand one another’s concerns, then it may be time to ask a third party to assist us.  We must state this to one another honestly and establish a plan for moving to the next level.  We have to always offer to others what we would want offered to us if the situation were reversed.
