CCS Mission: Key Strategy #1

from the Desk of the Head of School

AN INTERVIEW WITH A CCS ALUMNA

Rebecca Burger, CLASS OF 2009

The CCS mission is "to engage and educate young people to know Christ and be equipped to impact the world for God's Kingdom." CCS employs five key strategies to aid in accomplishing the mission. The first key strategy is to provide a rigorous, accredited program that prepares students to excel in college.

Even though God will not necessarily call every high school graduate to pursue a college degree, it is CCS's mission to provide a program that keeps that door open in the event that students do elect to go on to college. As a small school, it is particularly important for the school board and administration to identify the scope and parameters of the program that it is able to offer with excellence.

Cornerstone is committed to

maintaining K-12

accreditation stan-dards with the Association of Christian Schools International (ACSI) and Middle States Association (MSA). The accreditation renewal process is strengthened by our school's Curriculum Council model, which is the mechanism used by CCS to regularly evaluate our K-12 objectives and curricular tools to be sure they always reflect best practices and the college preparatory needs of our students.

With a lean, high quality group of dedicated teachers in place, CCS consistently emphasizes in its literature that Cornerstone's academic "sweet spot" for designing course offerings and instruction centers on meeting the needs of students with "average to above average" abilities. This becomes especially important when planning a program to meet rigorous college entrance requirements of high school graduates who would like to pursue a college education.

Rebecca’s journey to Cornerstone had many twists and turns! Initially, she began school in Turkey where her parents were missionaries. After they returned to the states, she spent her middle and early high school days at The King’s School (TKS) in Bolton. Once TKS closed their doors, Rebecca’s family decided to send her to CCS for her last two years of high school. Begrudgingly initially, Rebecca started and eventually found a home at CCS.

After the adjustment of her junior year, Rebecca said she became excited to begin her senior year. There was a different feel for her. Their small class was more bonded together, and it felt like a family. Part of the reason was because they had the opportunity to regularly join together in prayer. Rebecca said she thrived in her leadership classes where she felt empowered to become a young leader both inside and outside of school. Staff members, like Tammy Gerhard and Beth Russell, were instrumental in coming alongside her.

After graduation, Rebecca decided

called Teen Mania Ministries. She attended a program called the Honor Academy, which utilized a holistic approach to learning and being involved in ministry. Specifically, she was in the school of worship where the focus was on fasting, prayer, missions and practical ministry experience. At the end of her second year, she had an

Few young women can say that they’ve been an eyewitness to the fighting on the front lines of ISIS, but Rebecca can! She has had an adventurous life from growing up as a missionaries’ kid (MK) in Turkey, to traveling all over the world obeying God’s call. We’re glad God gave her a “pit stop” at CCS for two years!
