TEACHER FEATURE (continued from p. 2)

Meet Mr. JT Himmelstein

The most profound thing he ever did was believe in me. It gave me a lot of

freedom to live life with confidence.

Q. Do you have any advice for someone who wants to be in ministry?

You should never do it on your own.

Q. What do you love about being in ministry?

Being part of the process of discovery. Biblical discovery and self-discovery.

I love being part of that.

Q. How can you describe your seminary journey?

I started at Denver Seminary. I moved to South Hamilton to attend Gordon-

Conwell. I took a break and started again in 2015. I started in 2012, and it

took me until 2021 to finish. I wouldn’t have it any other way because God allowed me to take what I learned in the seminary classroom to apply it to ministry contexts. I have always found that invaluable. I needed to be actively involved in ministry. As long as Emmie has been alive, I have been a student.

Q. What was the most valuable lesson you learned from your seminary experience?

The community around you is essential to the kind of growth you will experience. You can grow closer or further from God and people, depending on the setting. Having the Landons, Mikes, Charleses, and Randalls from the world has made a huge difference in bolstering my faith and allowing me the opportunity to express what is in my heart without fear. I can trust that they can tend to my soul and benefit from the doubt when I’m working through new thoughts and ideas.

Q. Who is someone (dead or alive) in church history you would love to meet?

Augustine. He takes faith and baptism much more seriously than we do in our church experience. Confirmation (in my church) is only six weeks long. Augustine had people wait for two to three years. He pushed people to know their stuff and checked to see if they believed it.

Q. What are your hobbies?

I played basketball collegiately at Gordon. I play here twice a week in the mornings. Sitting in silence is also really valuable to me. It took me a while to realize the value of silence and personal time. I didn’t know I needed those until the summer between sophomore and junior year. My soul needs silence and solitude. I’d like to learn music and woodworking.

Q. What’s your favorite fast-food restaurant and what do you order?

My favorites are Ted Montana’s bison nachos with chili and lemonade.
